Petition to Transfer US Anthem to 'City Escape' From Sonic Adventure 2

Upon starting up Sonic Adventure 2, the first sight some players will be greeted with is falling from the sky and boarding down the San Francisco-esque “City Escape” level as Sonic the Hedgehog. The stage became a memorable landmark not only for it kicking off an epic story, the massive GUN truck aiming to mow you down, or a Big the Cat cameo, but also for its theme tune, “Escape from the City.”

The rock song spoke of Sonic’s desire for freedom and the thrill of escaping a city crawling with danger lurking around every turn. It still resonates with fans to this very day, so much so that there is now a Change.org petition calling for the theme to replace “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the new national anthem for the United States.

The online petition was created following NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during a performance of the anthem, who did so in protest of ongoing oppression against African Americans. Gabe Carey, who created the petition, stated that “the obvious solution would be to rid our nation of the injustices Kaepernick is protesting,” though it would take work that “we’ve clearly been incapable of to this point.” Therefore, he proposes that the national anthem of a still-divided country should be changed for the more hopeful and upbeat stylings of Sonic Adventure 2’s opening stage music. Whether or not it’s a lighthearted joke (it likely is), you can choose to sign the petition below.

Sonic Adventure 2 was digitally rereleased in 2012 for Steam, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The “City Escape” stage was later revisited in the PC and home console version of Sonic Generations, with new remixes of “Escape from the City” to accommodate Classic and Modern Sonic’s respective Acts.
