Adam Jones was targeted by a torrent of racist abuse at Fenway Park

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was targeted by a torrent of racist abuse at the hands of Red Sox fans at Fenway Park on Monday night.

Fans shouted racial slurs, including the “N-word,” and one threw a bag of peanuts at the All-Star outfielder, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Red Sox officials later confirmed a fan threw a bag of peanuts into the dugout and was ejected.

“Very unfortunate,” Jones said. “I heard there was 59 or 60 ejections tonight in the ballpark. … I just go out and play baseball. It’s unfortunate that people need to [resort] to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family.”

Jones, who went 0-for-4 in the Orioles’ 5-2 win over the Red Sox, also called for stiff fines for the type of behavior Fenway fans showed Monday night.

“It’s pathetic,” Jones said. “It’s called a coward. What they need to do is that instead of kicking them out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand, something that really hurts somebody.”
