Horry County Schools Closed Classes Tuesday and Wednesday

Horry County Schools announced Monday that classes are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday. A decision regarding Thursday’s schedule will be released Wednesday.

Schools have been closed since Wednesday, Oct. 5, when Gov. Nikki Haley urged residents in coastal communities to evacuate in advance of Hurricane Matthew.

Georgetown schools announced that there would be no classes on Tuesday, although essential personnel were asked to report if they were able.

Horry Georgetown Technical College also canceled classes Tuesday to allow students more time to recover from the recent hurricane. Students were advised to check the college website and local media Tuesday afternoon regarding classes on Wednesday.

Horry County School Board chairman Joe DeFeo said that he had reports back from about half of the county’s schools and 20 were without power as of 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Waterway Elementary in Little River reported that high winds took off a piece of the school’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system, which crashed through the roof and put a huge hole in a hallway ceiling, according to Horry County Schools spokeswoman Teal Britton.

The district was assessing damages to schools and checking roads to compile a full damage report on Monday.

The district’s facilities department employees and transportation supervisors were asked to report, if able to do so, to assist with recovery efforts, according to the district’s website.
