That’s one birthday message he probably didn’t want.
Chris Brown has – finally – been served with a restraining order from ex Karrueche Tran.
The singer was handed the court papers by a process server as he was leaving Grooves nightclub in Houston in the early hours of Friday morning, TMZ reported.
He was there to celebrate his 28th birthday.
His ex has accused him of beating her, throwing her down a stairs, and threatening to kill her.
The actress and model, also 28, has reportedly tried on multiple occasions to serve him with the papers, to no avail.
According to California law, a person not connected to the case or a professional server must identify the defendant and inform them they are delivering court papers to them.
The hearing is set for later this month.
In the filing, she said that Brown had beaten her during their relationship, which finally came to an end after it emerged in March 2015 he had had a daughter with aspiring model Nia Guzman.
She also said in a sworn statement he had ‘told a few people that he was going to kill me’.
Brown recently claimed his critics are ‘f***ed up’ for accusing him of using drugs and being obsessed with his ex lover.
Convicted woman beater Brown launched his foul-mouthed tirade after a Billboard article featured claims from collaborators and employees that he is a ‘bully’, ‘depressed’, and an ‘ungrateful, unappreciative and a foul person.’
It also detailed the 27-year-old’s alleged substance abuse, claiming it changed him from a nice man with a good heart into a ‘foul person.’
In clips posted on Instagram, he said: ‘Gotta stop with this angry s***, going through drugs and all this other s***.
‘I’m tired of reading about some sh** soon as I got something positive.
‘As soon as I want to promote a tour or party, f***ing album, anything you want to bring up something.’
The Poppin’ star then addressed his love life and supposed obsession with his ex, before flaunting his collection of sports cars.
Brown, who is worth an estimated $30M, said: ‘You all concerned about what girl talking to or what person I’m dating or who I’m seeing with
‘I’m seeing whoever I want to be seeing with, just like you can be, people can be with whoever they want to be.
‘I am not hurting out here trust me. Y’all got it f***ed up.’
He spoke out after the Billboard article, titled Chris Brown’s Downward Spiral, featured details of his alleged drug addiction and said he constantly lashes out at those around him.
One former member of his personal detail claimed: ‘He’s always on social media, looking up who Karrueche was with, what she was looking like, what club she was at, who posted to her Instagram.’
Earlier this week he was ordered by a judge to stay away one of Tran’s friends after allegedly threatening to shoot him.
Last year he almost ended up in a boxing match with Souja Boy, reportedly after the rapper liked one of her pictures on Instagram.
Tran split from Brown in March of 2015 when she discovered he had fathered a daughter – Royalty – with model Nia Guzman while they were together.
Having a child seemed to have a positive impact on the Kiss Kiss hitmaker; however, one former associate described him in the article as merely ‘a great Instagram dad’.
His team also detailed how they would have to tip toe around him.
‘He will cuss you out and say, ‘Hey, man, I’m functioning. I’m going to get the work out.’ And he does,’ said a current member of his team. ‘But [he’s not] the first functional star who thinks they can handle those powerful drugs. I got to say with all my heart, he’s dancing with death.’
‘I don’t think he hates women,’ a female employee said. ‘He’s actually a very sweet, sensitive guy. But they’re an easy target, and he’s a bully. It’s not just women — it’s everyone, and he can get away with it.’
‘We would ask, “What’s the temperature today?” said a former member of his security. ‘You didn’t know how he was going to wake up. Were you going to get cool Chris? Or depressed or artsy and focused Chris, who would be very productive? Or the happy-go-lucky Chris, who would just joke around and have fun? It was a different person every day.’
‘Sober Chris is a solid guy with a big heart,’ another continued. ‘High Chris and Chris coming off drugs is ungrateful, unappreciative and a foul person who most people don’t want to deal with.
‘Good Chris? You’ll fight for him. Unfortunately, the last couple of years, it has been drug Chris. That Chris is not a good dude.’
Last year Brown was sued by his former long time manager Michael Guirguis after he allegedly physically attacked him.
One former team member claimed Brown was ‘ticked off’ at the time because of poor sales of his latest album, Royalty.
‘He sets himself up in situations where he can’t lose, Like, “I am so angry at myself, and I can beat up on [Guirguis] because I’m surrounded by people whom I pay to protect me. I can be the big man.” And he can get away with it.
‘Once he did what he did to Mike G, there was no structure,’ that former security team member said. ‘We had no manager telling us what to do or where we were going. He would make people sleep on the bus [instead of hotels] when he was mad at them. He was threatening people and cops. He was calling himself the devil.’
‘He’s basically the new Bobby Brown,’ said a onetime member of Brown’s management. ‘Think about how big [Bobby] was in the ’80s — but you know he was a bad boy.’
‘He doesn’t know how to deal with the sins of his past. It’s always someone else’s fault,’ said another. ‘He becomes the victim. And I think he tries to numb whatever he is feeling.’
Brown was also accused of his former associates of spending money ‘before he has it — whether it’s cars, jewelry or drugs’.
‘He has no appreciation of it. He never wants to hear he has no money, and he blames everyone [else] when his funds run low.’
Brown’s former employees say some of his closest friends today are members of the Los Angeles Bloods.
‘He just doesn’t have the right people around him, people who are going to say, ‘Hey, dude, we shouldn’t be here’,’ one said.
‘You can talk to any drug addict or chemically imbalanced person — it doesn’t just go away,’ said another. ‘It’s something you have to work on. You have to change your lifestyle. And he’s not doing the things he needs to do to get well, so he’s never going to be well.
‘The kid is going to hit rock bottom.’
Unsurprisingly, those who were named in the piece had nicer things to say.
His longtime choreographer Flii Stylz described him as ‘almost God’s perfect person’.
‘No matter how he f*cks up and no matter what he does, another replacement for him is not on the way in the next decade,’ he claimed.
‘He lost Rihanna and Karrueche, two people he loved,’ he continued. ‘Right now, he doesn’t trust anybody. I’m probably the one who loves him the most out of everybody who is not his real family, and he won’t even talk to me. I can’t get to him.’
‘My brother is going through a lot. But he’s not crazy. This isn’t why I invested all this time into him. He goes in and out of being angry, but we want to see Chris dancing and singing.’
